During the exile years ANC taught its cadres the culture of responsibility on what it termed four pillars of struggle: Fight, Mobilize, Produce, and Learn. Cadres were encouraged to contribute their time in one of the four pillars as a sign of commitment to the struggling people of South Africa. Equipped with gardening tools, a team prepares to work in the fields.

Mendi Msimang (centre) was head of the National Education Council of the ANC, with Alfred Nzo (left) at the opening of the ANC Holland Solidarity Hospital at SOMAFCO, 1 May 1984.
